St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, November 5

From Fr. Ray +

This coming Sunday, November 5, we will be observing All Saints’ Day. As is our custom, we will be reading a list of names of loved ones who have passed on.  Please call the church office at 338-8115 or email the office at office@saintjohnshelena.org with the names of those you would like to have read during the service.

Stewardship Thought

“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc, is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditure excludes them.” ---C.S. Lewis in his book Mere Christianity

Weekly class topics and dates remaining are as follows:

October 29 and November 1:  Worship and Liturgy Part I

November 5 and 8:  Worship and Liturgy Part II

November 12 and 15:  The Diocese of Arkansas and St. John’s Helena-West Helena

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, October 22

From Fr. Ray +

The preface to an article about the Book of Common Prayer in the April 7, 2014 edition of the magazine Christianity Today says, “The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) has had an illustrious and checkered career since Archbishop Thomas Cranmer first introduced it to the Church of England back in 1549, almost five hundred years ago. If you've ever pledged to be faithful to someone "till death do us part," mourned to the words "earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust," or hoped for "peace in our time," you've been shaped by Cranmer's cadences, perhaps without knowing it.”

I will be leading a discussion about The Book of Common Prayer in Sunday School this week. We will look at how it is used in our worship, as well as at ways it can be a valuable resource for enriching your spiritual life seven days a week. The Adult Sunday School class meets at 9:15 a.m. in the undercroft. All are welcome!

Classes are scheduled for our Episcopal history, beliefs and practices.

Weekly topics are as follows:

October 15 and 18:  Theology and Spirituality in The Episcopal Tradition

October 22 and 25: The Book of Common Prayer

October 29 and November 1:  Worship and Liturgy Part I
