Annual Parish Audit Started Tuesday

Russ and Jackie worked with our auditor today, and completed the first day of an engagement which will last for several days. The audit is being conducted by Jeannie Fry,  a licensed Certified Public Accountant who for the last ten years has worked extensively with the Diocese of Arkansas and with a number of Episcopal parishes in Arkansas. She stresses doing things "by the book" and insuring that proper internal controls and financial procedures are in place and are being followed. When she says "by the book", the book to which she refers is the "Manual of Business Methods" publiched by the National Episcopal Church. For those with an interest in accounting, the book is available as a free download from http://www.episcopalchurch.org/notice/updated-manual-business-methods-congregations-available-episcopal-church-finance-office  More information about the Diocese of Arkansas audit requirements can be found at http://episcopalarkansas.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Audit-Policy-for-Congregations.pdf

Ms. Fry worked for AT&T for 25 years in various managerial positions, mostly around the state of Arkansas; her last assignment prior to her retirement was as the liason on all accounting issues between the corporation and the federal government while in Washington,  D.C.

Welcome to our Parish Blog

Welcome to our Parish Blog. This blog will be an extension of our "Announcements" column on the front page, which must be kept short due to the physical layout restrictions. There is plenty of room here to "ramble on". Some of the names we considered were "Old and New", which might have been confused with a Bible blog, and "Duly Noted", which is too dry and sounds too dull!

So we're just going to call it the "St. John's Parish Blog".

Most of the entries will just document the many small changes, challenges, chores, and accomplishments which make up our daily life as a small town Episcopal parish in the Diocese of Arkansas. We hope you will check this section on every visit.

Please let  us know what you think, leave a comment!

The United Thank Offering of the Episcopal Church has raised several million dollars this year, every single penny of which will go to grants to improve the lives of people through the Episcopal Communion across the world. Most of the grants will help people who themselves may not belong to an Episcopal Church but who most certainly are children of God. Along with 12 others from across the United States, I am on the National UTO Board and represent nine states. What a blessing this has been to me this past week as I, along with other board members, have begun reading these dozens of grant requests. The grant requests are for after school programs at various churches or center to keep children playing ping pong or basketball or learning to use computers rather than being pursued for gang membership; or for food pantries in the big city ghettoes; or for help with free medicals for indigenous folk who live more than 100 miles from a doctor. It is humbling to be able to help. Thank you, St. John's folk, for contributing nearly $1,000 in the past twelve months to give a hand to God's hildren.
