St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, October 1

From Fr. Ray +

Would you like to know more about Anglicanism and The Episcopal Church?  If so, I encourage you to be part of a seven-week course I will be leading during the Adult Sunday School hour at 9:15 in the undercroft.  I will teach the same course at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesdays, immediately following our mid-week Eucharist, starting October 4.  While this course is a good way for all of us to review and refresh our understanding of our church, it is especially helpful for those who would like to be baptized, confirmed or received into membership in The Episcopal Church when our bishop visits in early February. Weekly topics are as follows:

October 1 and 4:  A Brief History of Anglicanism

October 8 and 11: Organization of The Episcopal Church (Polity)

October 15 and 18:  Theology and Spirituality in The Episcopal Tradition

October 22 and 25: The Book of Common Prayer

October 29 and November 1:  Worship and Liturgy Part I

November 5 and 8:  Worship and Liturgy Part II

November 12 and 15:  The Diocese of Arkansas and St. John’s Helena-West Helena

I am willing to offer this course at other times, too, if Sunday or Wednesday do not work for you.  Just let me know.

St John’s and First United Methodist of Helena will be conducting a Blessing of the Animals event toward the end of October.  The exact date and time will be announced soon.

Please put these dates on your calendar.

  • October 15:  Lite lunch in the undercroft
  • November 22: Thanksgiving Service followed by snacks in the Chapel
  • December 3: Kick off Advent with a Soup Sampler Supper.  Details and time to be announced.

Fellowship is an important aspect of our life together.  I’ve noticed on Sunday mornings that sometimes the Passing of the Peace gets a bit long due to everyone wanting to visit with each other.  These fellowship events provide a wonderful opportunity to visit and catch up with one another.  I encourage you to make plans to attend each of these events.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Hurricane Harvey Relief

St. John’s is sending a donation for Hurricane Harvey relief.  All designated donations are being channeled through Bishop Benfield’s Emergency Fund. The good thing about donating through the bishop’s fund is that 100% what we send goes directly to relief efforts.  You can make a donation by sending a check to the church at P.O. Box 770, Helena, 72342, or by placing your donation in the offering plate on Sunday morning.  Thank you and God bless you as you seek to be a blessing to our brothers and sisters in Texas.

Beautiful Music at St. John’s

Sunday worshippers at St. John’s are in for a triple blessing during the month of September!  We are fortunate to have three talented soloists this month. The schedule is as follows:

Sunday, September 10:  Ms. Elizabeth Garcia

Sunday, September 17:  Mr. Everett Long

Sunday, September 24:  Ms. Vivian Hoskins

Have you invited a family member of friend to join you for worship at St. John’s?  Guests are always welcome!  Any one of these Sundays provide a wonderful opportunity to share the love of Christ and the beauty of worship in our Anglican tradition.

Confirmation/Informational Class

Towards the end of September, I will be leading a six-week Confirmation/Informational Class on The Episcopal Church.  While geared towards those who want to be Confirmed or Received into membership at St. John’s and The Episcopal Church, it will also be an excellent opportunity to refresh your knowledge of our faith tradition. Bishop Benfield’s next pastoral visit to St. John’s will be February 4, 2018, at which time those who have completed the class will have the opportunity to be baptized and/or confirmed.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

From Fr. Ray +

Our Fellowship Committee and their Chairperson, Carla Myers, did an awesome job with the luncheon and homemade ice cream social last Sunday following worship! Please let them know how much their efforts are appreciated.

Several folks have asked if there is a way to contribute to Hurricane Harvey relief through The Episcopal Church. A message from the Diocesan office said they are awaiting information from Texas Bishop, Andy Doyle, on how to best assist.  As soon as we have this information, we will pass it along to you.

We will be continuing our study of The Apostles’ Creed this week in Sunday School. Our topic this week is The Communion of the Saints.  Please consider joining us at 9:15 a.m. next Sunday!
