St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 14, 2018

From Fr. Ray +

January is a month of blessings at St. John’s!  On Sunday, January 21 we will celebrate the baptism of William Henry Fielder during our regular Sunday morning Eucharist. Then, following worship we will have our Annual Parish Meeting at which we will elect three new vestry members and take a quick look back at 2017, as well as a look forward to our life together in 2018.  Then, on Tuesday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pillow Thompson House, Mr. Chester Johnson will be presenting a program entitled Auden, The Psalms and Me.  Sunday, January 28 is the date of Bishop Benfield’s annual parish visit. Bishop Benfield will be baptizing, confirming and receiving several folks into the Episcopal Church during his visit.  Following worship we will have a potluck lunch with the bishop in the undercroft. Special music on the 28th will be by Everett Long, so we know we are in for some beautiful music!

The St. John’s vestry will meet on Monday, January 15 at 5:30 p.m.  This will be our final meeting with those vestry members whose three-year terms are ending when we elect three new members at our Parish Meeting on January 21.  Those going off the vestry this month include Melody Rogers, Maureen Jones and Julie Pittman. Each of them have been faithful vestry members who brought much insight and wisdom to our vestry.

Mark your Calendars for these February events!

  • Tuesday, February 13  Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper in the undercroft
  • Wednesday, February 14 5:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday Service

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 7, 2018

From Fr. Ray +

The liturgical season of Christmas comes to an end on January 5, the twelfth day of Christmas.  The next day, January 6, is Epiphany.  We will observe Epiphany with a service of Lessons and Music at 5:30 p.m. at the church. This service does not include a sermon or Holy Communion. The name “Epiphany” is derived from a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “appearing” and is a celebration of the light of Christ “appearing” to the entire world.

Our Annual Parish Meeting will take place Sunday, January 21 following worship. Please plan to join your church family as we share a pot-luck meal and reflect a bit on the past year.  Of even greater importance, we will elect three new vestry members and I will discuss some of my hopes and thoughts for St. John’s in 2018 and beyond.

Bishop Larry Benfield will be making his annual pastoral visit to St. John’s on Sunday, January 28.   An all-church potluck lunch will follow worship. I hope everyone who considers St. John their church “home” will be present to give our Bishop a warm Delta welcome.

Finally, thank you to our Altar Guild and the other volunteers who decorated our church building for Christmas.  You did a great job!  Approximately 110 worshippers were present for our 5:30 p.m. Christmas Eve Service.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

On Tuesday, January 23 St. John's is hosting a program entitled "Auden, The Psalms, And Me." The speaker will be Mr. Chester Johnson of New York. Mr. Johnson is a poet, essayist, and translator whose poem "St. Paul's Chapel" remains the memento card for the thousands of weekly visitors to the chapel, at Trinity Episcopal Church Wall Street, that survived the 9/11 attacks at Ground Zero. He replaced W.H. Auden as the poet on the drafting committee for the 1979 retranslation of the Psalms contained in the current edition of the Book of Common Prayer.

This free program will be held at The Pillow Thompson House and begins at 5:30 p.m. Wine and cheese will be served and Mr. Johnson will be signing copies of his book, "Auden, The Psalms, And Me".

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, December 31

From Fr. Ray +

I want to draw your attention to the New Year and ask that you save some dates on your calendar for January.

On Saturday, January 6, we will have an Epiphany Service at St. John’s at 5:30 p.m.  Epiphany, also Theophany or Three Kings' Day, is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally the visit of the Magi to the Christ child, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles.

Sunday, January 21, is the date for our Potluck and Annual Parish Meeting following worship.

On Tuesday, January 23, 5:30-7:00 p.m. St. John’s is hosting a program by Mr. Chester Johnson at the Pillow-Thompson House. Mr. Johnson will be presenting a brief program about his role in translating the Psalms for our 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Copies of his book, Auden, The Psalms, and Me, will be available for purchase at a discount. Wine and cheese will be served.

On Sunday, January 28, we will welcome Bishop Larry Benfield for his annual pastoral visit. A potluck will follow the worship service. It is always a pleasure to welcome our Bishop. Please make plans to be part of worship on this special occasion.

Thank you saving these dates on your calendar!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, December 24

From Fr. Ray +

Christmas Eve falls on Sunday this year, so we will have our usual 10:30 a.m. service as well as our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 5:30 p.m.  We are fortunate that Ms. Kelly Hermann (the flutist) will be with us again for our 5:30 service.  The secular observance of Christmas includes much fun and merriment, but it cannot compare with the deep JOY we experience when we take time to remember and celebrate its real meaning.  As St. Athanasius said fifteen hundred years ago: “Christ became like us so that we might become like Christ.”  Now, that is something worth celebrating!

Even though we are approaching the Fourth Sunday of Advent and will be in the Christmas Season, I want to draw your attention to the New Year and ask that you save some dates on your calendar.
