Lent at St. John’s

In the Book of Common Prayer we are called "to the observance of a Holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's Holy Word" (BCP, p. 265).  March 1, our Ash Wednesday Service will be at 5:30 p.m. As we did last year, we will have a Picnic in the Pews luncheon and Eucharist on Thursdays at noon beginning March 2.  Sunday worship will follow Rite I with Eucharist. So, please mark your calendar as you plan for a “Holy Lent.”           Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Lenten Class

During Lent I will be leading a class entitled “5 Marks of Love”, which has been described as “A discipleship offering inspired by the Anglican Marks of Mission.”  Each class will include a brief video presentation as well as questions and discussions of what it means to live life marked as Christ’s own. The class will meet in the undercroft at 9:15 each Sunday morning beginning February 26. All study materials will be provided free of charge.  Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and falls on February 28 this year. This date, of course, is also known as Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday.  We will observe Shrove Tuesday with a pancake supper from 5 p.m. till 6:30 p.m. at the church.  All are invited!

Outdoor Chairs Challenge!

With the dedication of the Gloria Y. Tappan Memorial Walkway, we are looking forward to using our lovely Garden more in the coming year. We would like to purchase 48 folding outdoor style chairs for such events.  A challenge gift has been made for the purchase of these chairs.  Every dollar given will be matched, up to $500.00.  The cost per chair is approximately $25, so your gift of $25 will actually enable the purchase of two chairs.  Chair donations can be made by placing a check in the offering plate, mailed or dropped off at the church office.

Lentat St. John’s

It seems like we just celebrated Christmas and here we are less than a month away from the beginning of Lent.  In the Book of Common Prayer we are called "to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word" (BCP, p. 265).  I wanted to let you know some of the things happening at St. John’s as we seek to experience a “holy Lent.” Though not technically part of Lent, we will be having a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at the church on February 28 5-6:30 p.m. The next day, March 1, our Ash Wednesday Service will be at 5:30 p.m. As we did last year, we will have a Picnic in the Pews luncheon and Eucharist on Thursdays at noon beginning March 2. On Sundays at 9:15 a.m. I will be leading a course called Beloved: Marks of Mission, Marks of Love.    Sunday worship will follow Rite I with Eucharist. Annual Parish Meeting a Big Success!

Thanks to all who helped make Our Annual Parish Meeting last Sunday a blessing!  The food was abundant and delicious.  The fellowship was even better and what a joy it was to have to set up two extra tables as attendance surpassed expectations.  The first meeting with our new vestry members will be Monday, February 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the church.

Following the Annual Meeting last Sunday, the vestry confirmed that Tait Owens will be continuing as Jr. Warden.  Walter Morris, Jr. will continue as Treasurer and Gibson Turley will continue as Clerk.

I look forward to working with our vestry and officers as we begin a new year of ministry and mission at St. John’s.                                                Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Are you aware that we have two mid-week Eucharistic Services at St. Johns? These services, which last about 25 minutes, are held on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Thursdays at noon in the chapel.  On the first Wednesday and Thursday of each month, the service is A Public Service of Healing, with anointing with oil for those desiring it. In addition to Holy Communion, each service includes scripture lessons, prayers and a brief homily.  There is no music. These services are helpful to those who cannot attend our principal service on Sunday and for those who want to include a mid-week Eucharist as part of their spiritual discipline.  As always, all are welcome.  Blessings, Fr. Ray

I would like to thank everyone at St. John’s for including my sister-in-law, Donna Drewry, in your prayers all these months after her accident in September 2016.  The power of prayer is a glorious thing.  She has done remarkably well considering the multiple injuries she received.   Donna is now at home, with a rigorous rehab schedule three times a week.  She still has a long way to go to achieve her goal.  Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, Marjie
