St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, May 14, 2017

From Fr. Ray:

Our Fellowship Committee met a few weeks ago to plan our Summer 2017 fellowship events. Please put the following on your calendar:

  • Sunday, May 21st we will honor high school graduate Katherine Wright with a reception and meal following worship. Special music at worship will be provided by oboist/clarinetist Mr. Drew Spencer-Bell.
  • Sunday, June 11th we will have a picnic at Heritage Trail following worship.
  • We are hoping to host a reception for Teach For America teachers in August, but are waiting to hear from the directors of the program before finalizing plans.
  • September 17 we will have a Picnic in the Pews following worship.  This will be similar to what we do during Lent.

In addition to these events, the Vestry will be sponsoring a lite supper and bingo night at the church on the second Thursday of every month. More information will be coming soon regarding the start date for this monthly fellowship opportunity.

In Ephesians 6:2 we are called to “bear one another’s burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ.” In order to better do that we are starting a new ministry known as “One Call.”  This new program will allow us to send text messages, emails and voicemails when there is a prayer request or as reminders when there is a church event coming up.  In order to participate in this new ministry the church office will need to know your preferred way of receiving messages, i.e. text, email, voicemail or a combination of those methods.  Of course, your cell number, email address and/or home phone number will be needed, too. You can participate in this new ministry by calling Marjie at the church office at 338-8115 or by signing up on the sheet on the table at the back of the church.  For your convenience you can tear off the form at the bottom of the newsletter, fill it in and email or mail it to the church office.              Blessings, Fr. Ray +

I will be leading a six week class on The Apostles’ Creed beginning Wednesday, May 17 at 6:15 p.m. and Thursday, May 18 at 10:30 a.m. These times allow those who so desire to attend both the class and one of the mid-week Eucharists.  I will also be leading the same class during the Adult Sunday School at 9:15 on Sunday mornings.  The Apostles’ Creed is an excellent summary of our Christian faith.  The subjects of each class will be as follows:

  • Week 1:  God
  • Week 2:  Jesus Christ
  • Week 3:  The Holy Spirit
  • Week 4:  The Church and the Communion of the Saints
  • Week 5:  The Forgiveness of Sins
  • Week 6:  The Resurrection of the Body

Each class will include a brief video by Rev. Adam Hamilton. We have used his material before and found it both inspiring and challenging.      Blessings, Fr. Ray+

Commemorative Coffee Table Book - We are looking into the possibility of publishing a commemorative coffee table book at St. John’s.  The book would be hardcover and contain around 125 pages of beautiful pictures of the interior and exterior of our building. Also included would be pictures of all of the memorial kneelers along with an index of who created each one of them.  The approximate cost of the book would be between $75 and $100 depending on how many are ordered.  If this is something you would purchase if it was produced, please let Marjie know by calling or emailing the church office.  There is also a sign-up sheet on the table at the back of the church.

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 23, 2017

From Fr. Ray

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who did so much to make our Holy Week and Easter services such a blessing! Allison and the Altar Guild did an outstanding job changing our altar coverings, stripping the altar on Maundy Thursday and arranging all the beautiful Easter lilies.  Jack and Elena did a wonderful job with the extended Gospel readings on Palm Sunday and Good Friday.  Ann arranged a lovely processional with our acolytes and children on Easter.  Wasn’t it a delight seeing the faces of all those happy children! Carla and the Fellowship Committee sponsored a delightful time of fellowship following worship. Our garden couldn’t have been lovelier and the children had a terrific time hunting eggs. As always, our choir was so very faithful in leading us in song. Finally, I am so very appreciative of all the folks from St. John’s who attended our Holy Week Services. Christ is risen!  He is risen indeed!

Delta Cultural Center Reconciliation Program, Sunday, April 23

This coming Sunday afternoon, April 23 at 2 p.m. the Delta Cultural Center will present a program entitled Reflection and Reconciliation: The Elaine Massacre.

Presenters will be J. Chester Johnson and Sheila Walker whose ancestors were directly involved in the tragic event. Johnson’s maternal grandfather participated, and several of Walker’s family members were victims, including her great-grandmother and great uncles. Over the last several years Johnson and Walker have committed to a reconciliation of the trauma associated with the event.

The presenters will share stories and history of their respective families related to the massacre, but the journey of reconciliation between the two presenters will also be given special relevance.

J. Chester Johnson is a member of Trinity Wall Street Episcopal Church in New York and worships at St. John’s whenever he is in town. Some of our folks may recall him joining us one evening last year when we were studying the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Reconciliation is an important theme in Christian scriptures, faith and theology. While there are differing understandings of what happened in Elaine nearly one hundred years ago, all can agree that reconciliation is an important part of our Judeo-Christian heritage.

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 16, 2017

April 15, Saturday, The Altar Guild will decorate church for Easter at 10:00.

From Fr. Ray

One of the things I love about our Episcopal liturgy is the opportunity to enter fully into the events of the life our Lord Jesus. On Palm Sunday we joined the crowd that cheered his entry into Jerusalem.  This week on Maundy Thursday at 5:30 p.m. we will remember Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. On Good Friday we will remember our Lord’s suffering and crucifixion with a noon service and at 5:30 p.m. we will walk the Stations of the Cross.

Then, on Easter Sunday at 10:30 we will celebrate our Lord’s resurrection and his victory over death.

I encourage you to attend as many of these services as possible. When taken together, they are a dramatic retelling of the story of our salvation. Our joy on Easter morning cannot be separated from the darkness and sadness of Thursday and Friday. Blessings to you on this holiest of weeks.

Fr. Ray +
