Thanks to everyone for providing a warm St. John’s welcome to Bishop Larry Benfield last Sunday.  The potluck following worship was filled with both good food and good fellowship.  A special thanks goes out to those who worked behind the scenes decorating tables and preparing food.  Also, thanks to your generosity we will be sending $400 to Bishop Benfield for his Discretionary Fund.

Our next big event is our Christmas Eve Service.  This Candlelight service will include lovely music from our own Katherine and Rachel Wright as well as familiar carols.  Please think about who you can invite to this beautiful service. See you Sunday!  ---- Fr. Ray+

A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS REQUEST FROM ST. FRANCIS HOUSE

St. Francis House is an Episcopal ministry in Little Rock that does a wonderful job caring for needy veterans and others throughout the year. The following request was put out this week as they prepare to help make Christmas brighter for our veterans and other persons in need:

We Need a Little Christmas

Outside our normal budget, we take on several Christmas projects that go to meet the needs of clients that have nowhere else to turn including holiday food gift boxes, gift bags for seniors, and presents for the families not adopted by other ministry drives. St. Francis House practically shuts down for a week as the staff personally packs the gift boxes and a tries to find ways to meet the needs the overlooked and underserved. Join us this holiday season by making a special donation so we can bring as many special memories to families as we can.

Gifts can be made directly to St. Francis House at:

St. Francis House, 2701 S. Elm, Little Rock, Arkansas, 72204.

 (All contributions are tax deductible)

Or, if you prefer, you can write a check to St. John’s, designated for St. Francis House and we will send in all donations in a single check.  Blessings!  Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church                 Sunday, November 20, 2016

This coming Sunday is the last Sunday in Pentecost, which means it is the final Sunday in the liturgical year.  Next week we start the liturgical cycle all over again as we enter Advent. It is fitting that the last Sunday of the church year is called Christ the King Sunday.  As we look back on a year of divisiveness in politics, wars abroad, terrorist attacks at home, suffering of the innocent and racial and class tensions it is good to remember that our primary allegiance is not to the principalities and powers of this world.  Christ is King and it is to him that we have given ourselves in our baptismal vows. The Apostle Paul, in writing to first century Christians in Galatia, reminded them that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  The fact that those qualities are lacking in most parts of our world just goes to show how very different the Kingdom of Christ is from the kingdoms of the world.  As we come to the end of the church year and begin a new one, let us remember that Christ, and Christ alone, is King.  Blessings, Fr. Ray +
