St. John’s Episcopal Church    Sunday, July 10, 2016

 

 WORSHIP AND EDUCATION NEWS:

 

ADULT EDUCATION: Sunday, July 10th, at 9:00 am. We will continue to focus on the study of Matthew and finish Chapter 27 and start on Chapter 28 (N.T. Wright’s book).

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Will meet at 9:00 at the First United Methodist Church.

WORSHIP: July 10th, the Holy Eucharist, Rite II, with Rev. Ray Brown.

READINGS for this Sunday (Eighth Sunday after Pentecost) areDeuteronomy 30:9-14;

Psalm 25:1-9; Colossians 1:1-14; Luke 10:25-37.

MIDWEEK EUCHARIST will be on Thursday, July 14th, at Noon.

 

PASTORAL NEWS:

 

Fun, Food and Fellowship time in the chapel, Sunday, July 10th,immediately following the service to share with the Together for Hope group.

THE CALL a DVD study and discussion of the life of St. Paul will have our last meeting Wednesday, July 13thMeeting times are: 10:30 A.M. and 6:30 P.M.

St. John’s Good Samaritans (ECW):Please feel free to call Maureen Jones (404-697-7197) or Jeannie Turley (870-816-6387) if you are in need of some help with errands or transportation or food, or if you would just like some company.

OUTREACH NEWS:

 

The Samaritan’s Purse: Donations that will fit in a shoe box can be placed in the basket by front door. Donations for July:   Clothes for boys and girls 5 to 9 (ALL MUST FIT IN SHOE BOX)

Angels of Grace and Anchor Mission Ministries: The item from their wish list this week is paper towels. Plastic tubs are located at the stair landing just outside the chapel.

Humane Society of the DeltaDonations needed aredog food, cat litter and large used bath towels.There is a plastic tub for them also on the stair landing.

There is a new outreach project at St. John’s. As you know, we support Grace Food pantry financially each month and with volunteers from the church. Each week the food is packed in plastic grocery/Walmart bags and handed out. We have a labeled container in the narthex for any plastic bags you might want to donate. It is a great way to recycle, help Grace Food pantry and those in need in our community. Thanks for your bags and support.

The Freeman Playground groundbreaking is set for Friday, July 8th, Noon-1:30 pm at the corner of Beech and Market Streets in downtown, Helena. St. John’s Episcopal Churchwill provide hot dogs, chips, watermelon, and water.Come meet your neighbors, have lunch, and find out more about the Freeman Playground.

 

Beginning July 8th – July 22ndSt John’s will host two groups from the Together for Hope that will be working throughout the community of Helena-West Helena on various projects. While staying in our undercroft, they will teach swimming lessons, repair several buildings and work on various projects in the community. We have hosted them over the past several years and they are always a delight to have with us. Many of them join us for the adult education class.  On Sunday, July 10th and July 17th we will provide a Fun, Food and Fellowship time in the chapel immediately following the service where we will have the opportunity to share food, stories and meet these wonderful people. So please mark your calendars for these Sundays and share in the light lunch and wonderful gathering of God’s people.

 

One Hundredth Birthday Celebration: Plans are underway for the 100th Birthday Celebration of the St. John’s church building on October 21-23 of this year.   The Birthday Committee held its first meeting on May 17. The following persons have volunteered to head up the various teams that will be working to ensure we have a wonderful celebration:

Please consider which of these groups you would like to help with and let the team leader know. As of this time plans include a Wine and Cheese Reception on Friday evening, Worship Service on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner/reception in the undercroft.   More information will be provided in future newsletters.

 

Freeman Playground:To keep up with the progress of the Freeman Playground, like their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/freemanplayground. For more information on how to donate, make an in-kind donation, or volunteer contact Misti Freeman Staley at 770-490-9973.

 

The next Cherry Street Fair will be July 9th from 5-8 pm. This is a great place to visit with friends and neighbors, enjoy some delicious food or cool off with a cold brew in the beer garden.
