WORSHIP AND EDUCATION NEWS:

 

ADULT EDUCATION: Sunday, August 14th, at 9:00 am. We will continue to focus on the study of Matthew with Chapter 31 (N.T. Wright’s book).

 

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Will meet at 9:00 at the First United Methodist Church.

 

WORSHIP: August 14th, the Holy Eucharist, Rite II, with Rev. Ray Brown.

 

READINGS for this Sunday (Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost): Jeremiah 23:23-29; Psalm 82; Hebrews 11:29-12:2; Luke 12:49-56.

 

MIDWEEK EUCHARIST will be on Thursday, August 18th, at Noon.

 

PASTORAL NEWS:

 

St. John’s Good Samaritans (ECW): Please feel free to call Maureen Jones (404-697-7197) or Jeannie Turley (870-816-6387) if you are in need of some help with errands or transportation or food, or if you would just like some company.

OUTREACH NEWS:

 

The Samaritan’s Purse: Donations that will fit in a shoe box can be placed in the basket by front door. This month will be clothes and toys for boys and girls 10-14.

           

Angels of Grace and Anchor Mission ministries: The item from their wish list this week is laundry detergent & bleach.  Plastic tubs for each are located at the stair landing just outside the chapel.

 

Humane Society of the Delta: Donations needed are dog food, cat litter and large used bath towels. There is a plastic tub for them also on the stair landing.

 

Grace Food Pantry labeled container in the narthex is for any plastic bags you might want to donate.

 

CHURCH OFFICE NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Hope For The Future is a program offered through Alzheimer’s Arkansas.  If you have a loved one with dementia, or if you just want to know more about caring for those with dementia or alzheimer’s, I enthusiastically recommend this program.  It will be a half-day well spent.  Please call me if you would like to know more about this opportunity that is coming to Helena on Friday, September 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at UAMS East.  Additional information about this event can be found in following newsletters.  Blessings! -- Fr. One Hundredth Birthday Celebration: Plans are underway for the 100th Birthday Celebration of the St. John’s church building on October 21-23 of this year.   The Birthday Committee held its first meeting on May 17. The following persons have volunteered to head up the various teams that will be working to ensure we have a wonderful celebration:

Food: Julie Pittman

Displays and Memorabilia: Grace Henderson

Decorations: Carla Myers

 

Please consider which of these groups you would like to help with and let the team leader know. As of this time plans include a Wine and Cheese Reception on Friday evening, Worship Service on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner/reception in the undercroft.   More information will be provided in future newsletters.

St John’s historical records: The Women's Missionary Society in 1879 paid the monthly salary for the organist. The salary was $8.00 per month.
