St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, June 10, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Last Sunday we kicked off a new Adult Sunday School class entitled “Short Stories of Jesus.”  The brief video of Dr. Amy-Jill Levine was excellent, as was the discussion by the class.  This week we will be taking a fresh look at the parable of The Good Samaritan. Dr. Levine helps us better understand these familiar parables by broadening our understanding of the cultural context in which Jesus first spoke them.  These parables of our Lord have a timeless quality that speaks to our world just as they did to Jesus’ first listeners.  Please consider joining us at 9:15 on Sunday mornings!

Sunday, June 17 is Father’s Day and is also the date of our next Fellowship Gathering at St. John’s.  Our Fellowship Committee is hosting a Baked Potato Luncheon in the undercroft immediately following worship.  Hot baked potatoes and delicious toppings will guarantee no one leaves hungry!

By way of reminder, we celebrate a mid-week Eucharist in the chapel every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. On the first Wednesday of the month we conduct a Healing Eucharist with unction (anointing with oil). Wednesday, June 6 is the date of our next Healing Eucharist.

Do you have a tux, or other men's formal wear, that has "shrunk" over the years or that you no longer wear?  If so, please consider donating it to the Pop Up Prom Shop.  Last year this group started collecting used prom dresses and they are now expanding their mission to include formal wear for young men. Sarah Melby, who is on the staff at Thrive, along with others from area schools, are coordinating this worthwhile project.  Back in the dark ages I paid $16 to rent a tux for prom.  The cost today is close to $200. If you would like to donate clothes or money to this project you can email Sarah at sarah@thrivecenter.org or drop off your donation at the church and we will deliver it for you.  Thank You!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
