St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, February 9, 2020

Brother James Koester is a monk at the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Boston and is a monastery colleague of Brother Jim Woodrum, the speaker for our Mini Lenten Retreat this year.  In a recent article about Lent he wrote these wise words:

“If this is what Lent is about, a time to renew our repentance and faith, then it is not a time to be miserable, to lose weight, to break old habits. Instead it is a time to discover who we truly are: a people worthy of pardon and absolution, a people worthy of the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a people worthy to stand in God’s presence, as our Eucharistic Prayer reminds us. And that is who we are, a people worthy of God’s love. That is the purpose of Lent, to discover our worth, not to revel in our misery.”

We will be doing just that during our Lenten programs for 2020.  I encourage you to mark your calendar now for the following opportunities to be reminded of, or maybe even discover for the first time, how worthy you are of God’s love.

  • Feb. 25:  Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
  • Feb. 26:  Ash Wednesday Service @ 5:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 28:  6 PM Supper and program with Bro. Jim Woodrum
  • Feb. 29:  9:30 AM Breakfast and Program w/ Bro. Jim

Beginning on Wednesday, March 4, we will have our usual mid-week Eucharist at 5:30 PM, followed by a simple soup supper and brief program.  This Wednesday program will run for five consecutive Wednesdays, ending on April 1.   Please be watching for the Soup Sign Up Sheet on the table in the narthex.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
