St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, March 29, 2020

FROM FR. RAY+

Last night the St. John’s vestry met via conference call to discuss the ways we can best serve the needs of our congregation during the COVID-19 pandemic. These are the things discussed by the vestry:

  • One of our primary concerns is to be available to any among our congregation who have a need due to being homebound.  While we cannot make face-to-face visits, we are available, along with other volunteers in our congregation, to deliver food, medicine or other essentials.  You can arrange for assistance by calling the church office at 338-8115.  If you become aware of a possible need, please call me and I will follow up on it.
  • Since worship is at the core of who we are as the people of God, we are making plans to livestream services on Sunday mornings.  We also hope to livestream the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services during Holy Week.  At the moment, we are waiting on the necessary equipment to arrive.  We are grateful to Nolan Dean for volunteering his expertise in setting this up.
  • We want to keep clear lines of communication open with our congregation at all times.  As usual, there will be a weekly newsletter.  Sometimes there may be more than one newsletter go out.  Of course, you are welcome to call me or the church office at any time.  I’m also working on a plan to email occasional mini-devotionals as well as inspirational writings that I come across or that are submitted to me by others in the church.  At some point I may do some Facebook Live stuff, but first I’ve got to learn how to do it!
  • Prayer remains an important part of our daily life and, as such, we will be exploring ways to pray together even when we cannot be together physically.  Please read the article in this newsletter about the call to prayer at noon this coming Wednesday, March 25.  The vestry has asked that everyone please remember our nurses, doctors and health care professionals.  At St. John’s that includes: Dr. T. Reddy, Drs. Ned, Jill, Gill and Jessica Pillow.  Our nurses include: Melody Rogers, Chris Rogers, Amy Cook, Andrea Clark, Regina Allen and Liz Carter Jimenez (Susan Carter’s daughter).  If I’ve missed anyone, please forgive me and let me know.
  • Finally, the vestry has asked that everyone, to the extent they can do so, please remember to mail in your offerings to the church office at P.O. Box 770, Helena, 72342.  If you give by automatic drafts from your bank, those will continue and you don’t need to do anything differently.  Unfortunately, our bills don’t know about social distancing and they continue to show up!

I’m proud of our vestry for their commitment to St. John’s.   And I am proud to be the rector of the kind of church that will work and pray together for each other and the broader community.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

All Christians Invited to Pray on Wednesday, March 25th

[March 23, 2020] Episcopalians are invited to join with Christians around the world as together we join in praying the Lord’s Prayer on Wednesday, March 25 at noon in our own time zones in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pope Francis Invites Christians to Pray on March 25th

Pope Francis on Sunday invited all Christians to respond to the coronavirus pandemic “with the universality of prayer, of compassion, of tenderness”, adding, “Let us remain united. Let us make our closeness felt toward those persons who are the most lonely and tried”. Speaking after the traditional recitation of the Angelus, the Holy Father called on all Christians to join together in prayer. “In these trying days, while humanity trembles due to the thread of the pandemic, I would like to propose to all Christians that together we lift our voices towards Heaven,” he said.

On Wednesday, 25 March, the feast of the Annunciation, Pope Francis has invited “the Heads of the Churches and the leaders of every Christian community, together with all Christians of the various confessions, to invoke the Almighty, the omnipotent God, to recite at the same time the prayer that Jesus, our Lord, taught us” – the Our Father. Pope Francis prayed, “may the Lord listen to the united prayer of all of His disciples who are preparing themselves to celebrate the victory of the Risen Christ”.

We are inviting you to issue a call through your networks and social media for Christians to join in praying the Lord's Prayer, and in any other ways we are led to pray, at:  Wednesday, March 25 at 12:00 noon in our time zone.
