On behalf of the St. John’s Spiritual Development Group I am pleased to let you know that our next event will be led by Rev. Stuart Hoke on Saturday, May 11, in the undercroft.  Currently on staff at Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock, Rev. Hoke was on staff at Trinity Church Wall Street on 9/11.  He will be speaking to us about his experiences on that horrible day.  During the attacks he was at Trinity’s St. Paul’s Chapel, which was practically in the shadows of the twin towers.  I believe you will be deeply blessed by his presence in our midst.

From Fr. Ray+

Our Ash Wednesday service is this Wednesday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel.  This deeply moving service marks the beginning of our Lenten Journey.  We will continue that journey each Wednesday at 5:30 with a brief Eucharist in the chapel, followed by a simple soup supper and program in the undercroft.  Our program this year is entitled The Way of Love, Practices for Jesus-Centered Life.  Each week we will focus on one spiritual practice of The Way of Love. These practices are Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go and Rest.  Since there are a total of seven practices, some weeks we will take a look at two of them.  In commending this program, our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, writes By entering into reflection, discernment and commitment around the practice of The Way of Love, I pray we will grow as communities following the loving liberating, life-giving way of Jesus. His way has the power to change each of lives and to change this world.”

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, March 3, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Shrove Tuesday is next week on March 5. It is also known as Shrovetide Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday. So what does "Shrove" mean?  And why do some Christians eat pancakes on that day?

  • Pancakes were traditionally eaten on the day before Ash Wednesday because they were a way to use up eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. Liturgical fasting during Lent emphasizes eating plainer food and refraining from "pleasurable" foods such as meat, dairy and eggs.  Many people "give something up" during Lent as a way to prepare for Easter.
  • Shrove is the past tense of shrive, which means to gain absolution of sins by confession and repentance.  Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Tuesday in some western European countries. The pancake aspect is not as widely observed in the United States as it is in England.

Episcopal churches, being affiliated with the Church of England, carry on the tradition of Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers.

Our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at St. John’s will be prepared by our Men’s Group and will be served between 5 and 6:30 p.m. in the undercroft.  Feel free to invite your friends! All are welcome!

Last week I became aware of a 71 year old homeless veteran who is undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer.  Mr. L has been approved for an apartment at Christopher Homes in West Helena.  His apartment will be ready this Wednesday, February 27.  In the meantime, we have provided lodging for him at the Crown Inn and have given him a little cash for food.  We will also be paying his deposit and pro-rated first month’s rent of two days.  Mr. L receives a small Social Security and Military pension that is adequate for his rent and living expenses, so he should not need any additional assistance moving forward.

By the time we finish assisting Mr. L we will have spent around $850, which exceeds the amount  budgeted each month through our Outreach Budget.  If you would like to help cover these expenses, please let me know.  Also, it would be nice if we could provide Mr. L with used sheets, blankets and pillows that are still in serviceable condition.

Thanks for considering this request for assistance!

 Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, February 17, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Dear St. John’s Friends and Family,

I am deeply appreciative to everyone who has been keeping me in their prayers as I deal with some gait and balance issues.  As you may have noticed, sometimes I am a bit unsteady on my feet and have slight tremors in my hands and legs, mostly on my left side.  My neurologist in Little Rock has been running tests to figure out exactly what is going on.  So far, he has ruled out Parkinson’s Disease and several things related to my brain such as a tumor, stroke or aneurysm.  This coming Friday I am having a nerve conduction test and further tests may be ordered depending on what that shows.  As I learn more, I will pass that information along to you.  The symptoms I am dealing with are fairly obvious.  To that end, I don’t want anyone wondering what is going on or what I am doing about it.  The good news is that I feel fine and my energy level is good.  These symptoms do not slow me down or prevent me from doing all the ministry related things I’ve always done.  I have good doctors and I am confident they will get this figured out.  In the meantime, please continue to keep me in your prayers.

Thanks,  Ray+

The Arkansas Diocesan Convention is taking place February 15 and 16 in Little Rock.
