St. John’s Episcopal Church           Sunday, October 23, 2016

After months of planning, preparation and prayer our 100th Birthday Celebration is this coming Saturday!  I hope you will join the many St. John’s members, friends and former members who are coming together for this joyous event.  The Eucharist will be celebrated at 4 p.m. with myself and Fr. John Leach of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Memphis.  Fr. Leach’s father was the rector at St. John’s in the 1960’s.  Following the service, we will gather for a catered dinner in the undercroft.  The gallery of pictures in the undercroft provides a marvelous look at the St. John’s family over the years.  If you have not yet called the church office with your RSVP, please do so today.                       Fr. Ray +

Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 16

As we have done the last few years, St. John’s will join with First United Methodist Church for the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 16 from 3 to 5 p.m.  One BIG change this year is that the event will take place at the Helena West-Helena Humane Society facility at 9518 Phillips 300 Road. (Old Little Rock Road.) All animals and their humans are invited!

The Blessing of the Animals Event is usually held on or near the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which falls on October 6.  The event is being held a little later this year due to the Blues Festival.  In the spirit of St. Francis, it is hoped that holding this year’s event at the Humane Society will serve to remind all of us of the many homeless animals in our community as well as provide opportunity for those who may be considering adopting a new pet.  Fr. Ray

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are only ONE WEEK away from our Hundredth Birthday Celebration on Saturday, October 22!  The committee working on this event has done a splendid job planning and organizing for this milestone in the life of St. John’s.  I hope you are planning to be present for this joyous occasion.  While we are thankful for the lovely building in which we worship, we are even more grateful for the hundreds of people who have worshipped in it over the course of the last century.  They came week after week to hear God’s word proclaimed, partake of the Blessed Sacrament, experience Christian fellowship and be sent forth to live out the Gospel in word and deed.  Some of their pictures are on display in the undercroft.  Though gone from our physical presence they still join us in the great song of the saints before the throne of God.  “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might! Heaven and earth are full of your glory!”  Indeed it is! --- Fr. Ray

FAMILY BURNED OUT OF HOME

Earlier this week I learned of a local family of 5 who was burned out of their home.  I spoke with a representative of the Red Cross who confirmed the family’s situation.  Please review this list to see if you have any items in your garage or attic that could be donated to this family.  The Red Cross helped them move into a mobile home, so space is limited.  Children’s clothing needs have been somewhat met through a gift from the OPM trust. Other needs include:

  • Kitchen table and chairs
  • Bed frames and mattresses
  • Toddler bed (for a 2-year-old)
  • Sofa and chairs
  • Window air conditioner
  • Box fans
  • Mom:  size 14 pants, XL shirts/blouses, size 9 shoes
  • Dad:  34 X 32 pants, XL shirts, size 10 shoes

Thanks for helping where you can!                Fr. Ray+
