St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 26, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

St. John’s is hosting a welcome party for Teach For America teachers and supporters.  The party will be held at the home of Lindalu and Alan Hargraves on Thursday, August 30 at 5:30 p.m.   Please save the date and drop by to welcome these new teachers!  Several of them have already visited our Sunday morning worship service.  Let’s make sure they know how glad we are to have them in our community and how welcome they are at St. John’s!

If you receive the diocesan newsletter, The Communique, you may have seen Bishop Benfield’s appeal for financial support for clergy in the Diocese of Cuba.  At the recent General Convention of the Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Cuba was welcomed back into the Convention after an absence of over fifty years.  During this time, faithful clergy have continued to serve the Cuban Church.  However, the political realities in Cuba meant that none of them have any pension or retirement support.  Each diocese in The Episcopal Church has been asked to contribute $6,500 to the Church in Cuba for the specific purpose of providing pensions for elderly Cuban priests and deacons.  Contributions can be made to St. John’s and earmarked for “Cuban Church.”

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 19, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Last Sunday we had an unexpected visitor at our worship service.   Shortly after the service started, a disheveled man and his dog entered the church and sat down on the back pew. We learned later that he was a canoer on his way to Louisiana and had stopped to spend the night at the boat ramp at the Helena Harbor.   Due to the sad situation with the murder/suicide that happened at the harbor while he was there, he had to leave the park until the police finished their investigation.   After leaving the park he found his way to St. John’s.   I am so proud of the way he was welcomed by our congregation!   He was warmly greeted, invited to come forward for Communion, given some cash and provided with a hotel room for two nights.   On Tuesday I picked him up at the hotel and took him back to his canoe so he could continue his trip down the river.   Whenever opportunities like this arise I am reminded of Hebrews 13:2

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for bydoing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Teach For America Party!   On Thursday, August 30 at 5:30 p.m. St. John’s is hosting a party for Teach For America teachers at the home of Lindalu and Alan Hargraves. Everyone at St. John’s is invited to come out and welcome these young folks who have come from all around the country to teach in our local schools.   More information will be provided as we get closer to the date of the party.

Attention all Vestry Members!  Our next meeting will be held Monday, August 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the undercroft.

Blessing Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 12, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Several students and teachers came forward for a blessing last Sunday during worship.   Please keep all of them in your prayers as they begin a new school year.  Also, we blessed the “little red wagon” that was filled to overflowing with paper and pencils for teachers in our community.  Special thanks go out to those who served up a delicious lunch of cold cut sandwiches, chips, drinks and ice cream and decorated the tables with school supplies.  It was the perfect way to kick off the new school year!

After taking a break in July, our vestry will meet on August 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the undercroft.  As a reminder, vestry meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend.  While only vestry members are eligible to vote, monthly meetings are open to the public.  A typical meeting includes brief reports from the Rector, Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden and Treasurer followed by a discussion of Old and New Business.  Please keep the men and women of our vestry in your prayers as they serve our congregation. Current vestry members include: Jack Hornor (Sr. Warden), Tait Owens (Jr. Warden), Buff Brothers, Carla Meyers, Jane Hornor, Tap Jennings, Gina Pillow, Bob Lee and Grace Henderson.  Walter Morris, Jr. serves as Church Treasurer and Gibson Turley is Secretary of the Vestry.  I appreciate our vestry members and their commitment to St. John’s.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 5, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

All children and school teachers are invited to bring their backpack (or briefcase) to church this coming Sunday, August 5, for a blessing!  We will observe the Blessing of the Backpacks as well as the blessing of the paper and pencils we have been collecting all summer for the teachers in our community.  Following worship we will enjoy a wonderful lunch of cold-cut sandwiches and an ice cream bar with lots of toppings.  Everyone is encouraged to wear their St. John’s t-shirts to this time of blessing and celebration!  Please think about the children and teachers in your family or neighborhood who you could invite to come to church with you next Sunday.

Last Thursday evening 17 men from St. John’s gathered for a hamburger supper and our first St. John’s Men’s Group meeting.  The food and fellowship was terrific and we look forward to gathering again on Thursday, October 18.  A big THANK YOU! goes out to West Hornor for organizing this gathering and cooking up some really great burgers!

Our ECW is collecting supplies for Helena-West Helena teachers.  By providing these much needed supplies we are able to help both teachers and students.  Many teachers go above and beyond in buying supplies for their classrooms.  Hopefully, our support will remind them that we value all they do for the students of our community.  The following items are being collected and can be placed in the red wagon in the narthex:

  • #2 Wooden Pencils (Ticonderoga brand are best)
  • Wide-ruled notebook paper

Any donations of money designated for “Teacher Supplies” will be used to purchase pencils and paper.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, July 29, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

All St. John’s men are invited to a hamburger supper this Thursday, July 26 at 6 p.m. at the church! While there is no program planned, we will take a few minutes to talk about what we, as the men of St. John’s, might want to do moving forward.  Your ideas and suggestions are encouraged!

Our next all-church social event will be after church on Sunday, August 5!  We will have a light lunch of cold-cut sandwiches followed by a variety of ice cream and toppings for dessert.  During worship on the 5th we will have a Blessing of the Backpacks for all children and teachers who are preparing to start the new school year.  Also, we will bless the paper and pencils we have been collecting for Helena-West Helena school teachers.

The last of the Together For Hope volunteers left at the end of last week.  I appreciate St. John’s willingness to host these energetic folks from North Carolina and Texas.  They make a big difference in our community and I’m glad we can be a part of their efforts. Especially, thanks go out to those who provided lunch for the volunteers on July 8th and 15th.   Also, thanks to Paulette Parker for providing ice cream treats for the workers on July 11th.
