St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, July 22, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

We are just a week away from the first meeting of the St. John’s Men’s Group!  We’ll gather at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, for hamburgers, cold beer and good company.  There is no program planned other than a discussion about what we might be interested in doing moving forward.  Ideas and suggestions are welcome!  For more info contact the church office or West Hornor.

Long-time member Jenny Topp fell last week and broke her foot.  She underwent surgery at the Helena-West Helena Hospital and has moved to a rehab facility in Memphis to get back on her feet.  Her address at the rehab is:

Ms. Virginia Topp

Jewish Home and Rehab

36 Bazeberry Road

Cordova, TN 38018

Whenever the little red wagon shows up in the church narthex, you know our ECW is up to something good!  Up until the start of the new school year, our ECW is collecting supplies for Helena-West Helena teachers.  By providing these much needed supplies we are able to help both teachers and students. Many teachers go above and beyond in buying supplies for their classrooms.  Hopefully, our support will remind them that we value all they do for the students of our community.  The following items are being collected this summer and can be placed in the red wagon in the narthex:

  • #2 Wooden Pencils (Ticonderoga brand are best)
  • Wide-ruled notebook paper

Any donations of money designated for “Teacher Supplies” will be used to purchase pencils and paper.

We will bless these donations of pencils and paper, along with our student’s backpacks, at our August Ice Cream Social.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, July 15, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Last Sunday following worship we enjoyed a wonderful lunch with the Together For Hope volunteers staying at St. John’s.  Many thanks go out to Angie Fielder and her crew who did such an outstanding job putting this luncheon together on short notice.  If you missed it, don’t worry!  We are doing it again this coming Sunday, July 15!  I encourage you to stay for lunch next Sunday and meet some of the folks who are spending their summer vacation making a difference in Helena-West Helena.

The triennial convention of The Episcopal Church is happening this week in Austin, Texas.  Our own Susan Carter is a delegate from the Diocese of Arkansas.  Please keep her in your prayers this week.

We’re getting close to the date of our first Men’s Group hamburger supper at the church!  On Thursday, July 26, all men are invited to come to the church at 6 p.m. for this supper.  We’ll enjoy some excellent fellowship and spend a few minutes talking about ways the men of St. John’s can make a difference in our church and community.  For more information call West Hornor or myself.

Dear Friends of the Pantry:

Grace Food Pantry gratefully acknowledges your continued

financial support to our ministry.

With the summer here food insecurity continues to grow in

our area, especially at this time of year when the youth are

home from school.

Thank you again for supporting Grace Community Food Pantry.

We do not take your giving for granted.  Please let the

congregation know we appreciate their giving to Grace.

Sincerely,

Doris Smith

ATTENTION ALL MEN!  We are starting a men's group at St. John's!  Our first gathering will be Thursday, July 26, at 5:30 p.m. at the church.  Hamburgers and beer will be served and we will spend a little time talking about where we want to go from here.  More info will be coming soon.  In the meantime, please put the date on your calendar.  If you have any questions, call West Hornor or Fr. Ray.

When I was a kid growing up in rural Tennessee, it was always a big deal when we had “company coming.”  Mom would cook and clean for days to make sure our “company” received a warm welcome. Well, we have some “company” coming to St. John’s in July.  As in past years, mission team members with Together For Hope will be staying in our undercroft.  The first team of 17 volunteers will be with us July 10-16 and the second team of 19 volunteers will be with us July 17-23.  These volunteers will be spending their days working on various projects in our community.  When you see them be sure to let them know how glad we are to have them in Helena-West Helena for a few weeks.  While we don’t have to do any “cooking” or “cleaning” for them, we can reach out to them and make sure they receive a warm Delta welcome.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
