St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, November 11, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Thanks to everyone who helped make last Sunday a wonderful day of giving at St. John’s!  If you were unable to turn in your Financial Commitment Card during worship you may still do so by mailing it to the church office, dropping it off with Marjie or placing it in the offering plate next Sunday.  Outreach Giving Cards were distributed at the luncheon following worship and those, too, can be mailed in, dropped off or placed in the offering plate.  I was very inspired by our speakers at the luncheon.  It was a blessing to hear about the wonderful work these agencies are involved in throughout Helena-West Helena.  If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider supporting one or more of these groups by completing an Outreach Giving Card.  One hundred percent of funds received will go to the group or groups you designate on your card.  All checks should be made out to St. John’s Church.  We will handle distributing your gift to your designated recipients.  Finally, thanks to all who turned in a UTO box last Sunday.  I feel blessed to be part of a church that is so very generous in supporting those beyond our walls!

LaQuenta Baker, of Helena, has been awarded a Helen G. Bonner Scholarship to Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas-Helena.  This award is a partial scholarship.  A graduate of Central High School, Baker is currently pursuing a career in phlebotomy.

The Bonner Scholarships were established by Ben Bonner in memory of his mother.  These awards are designed to assist hard-working students and specifically target students who have shown potential.  To qualify, applicants must have completed their course work at Phillips College with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, November 4, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

This coming Sunday, November 4, is going to be a wonderful day of worship and celebration at St. John’s!  We will be observing All Saint’s Day as well as making our financial commitments to St. John’s for calendar year 2019.  The Might Souls Brass Band from Memphis will be our guest musicians at worship.  Following worship, we will enjoy a delicious potluck lunch in the undercroft.  Meat will be provided.  Everyone is encouraged to bring a side dish to share.  During lunch, 5 area agencies will make brief presentations about the work they do meeting needs in Helena-West Helena.  Those agencies include:  Anchor Mission, The Angels of Grace Women’s Shelter, Grace Food Pantry, Young Life of Phillips County and The Humane Society of the Delta.  I hope you will be present for this time of remembering our loved ones who have passed on and celebrating God’s mercy and provision through sharing from the fruit of our labor.

While stewardship of our resources is something we talk about throughout the year at St. John’s, at this time of year we take a more focused look at our call to be faithful in the use of our time, talent and treasure.  This Sunday Walter Morris, Jr. will give a brief testimony during the announcement time of worship about why he contributes financially to St. John’s.

Your 2019 Estimate of Giving Card was enclosed in your letter sent out last week. Your card can be placed in the offering plate during our All Saints’ Day celebration on Sunday.  Giving cards are also  available on the back table.  If you cannot be present for worship on Nov 4th, you can mail your card or drop it off at the church office.

We will be observing All Saints’ Day at St. John’s.  Please let the church office know of loved one’s names you would like to have read during the memorial portion of the service.

This weekend is the time to FALL BACK!  Don’t forget to turn your clocks back on Saturday night.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

MEN’S GROUP CHILI SUPPER! Thursday, October 25 @ 6 p.m. at Church!

All men are invited to come enjoy hot chili and cold beer this coming Thursday, October 25 at 6 p.m. at the church.  Jack Hornor and Tap Jennings are making the chili, so you know it’s going to be good!  You are welcome to bring a friend.

We are less than two weeks away from our All Saint’s Day/Commitment Sunday on November 4.  The Mighty Souls Brass Band will be providing joyful music for the service and various agencies will be presenting brief presentations during the luncheon following worship.  Our pledge cards will be received during worship and Outreach Cards will be available at the luncheon.  I hope you will join us as we remember those who have passed into God’s nearer presence, celebrate our blessings and respond by making financial commitments to God’s work in our church and in our community.

While stewardship of our resources is something we talk about throughout the year at St. John’s, at this time of year we take a more focused look at our call to be faithful in the use of our time, talent and treasure.  On each of the next three Sundays a different layperson will give a brief testimony during the announcement time during worship about why they contribute financially to St. John’s. Our speakers will be:

  • October 28      Nolan Dean
  • November 4    Walter Morris, Jr.

Within the next week you will receive a letter from me in which I mention some things I believe about our call to be stewards.  Your 2019 Estimate of Giving Card will be enclosed. Your card can be placed in the offering plate during our All Saints’ Day celebration on Sunday, November 4.  If you cannot be present for worship on Nov 4th, you can mail your card or drop it off at the church office.

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, October 14, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

I have received a lot of positive feedback about the beautiful organ music last Sunday.  Dr. Gabriel Statom (he likes to be called “Gabe”) will be at the organ again this coming Sunday, as well as the rest of the Sundays in October.  Hopefully, he will remain with us beyond this four-week interim period.  If you have friends who appreciate fine music and who don’t already attend church elsewhere, I encourage you to invite them to worship with you at St. John’s.  The Worship Advisory Group and I hope the presence of exceptional organ music will be one step toward helping St. John’s become a “regional” church.  We believe there are many people within a twenty-mile radius of St. John’s who would appreciate music that draws the heart to God within the context of the beauty of Anglican worship.   As God’s people we are called to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others so that they may experience the joy that comes from a heart turned toward him.  Beautiful music is but one way of doing that.

On an entirely different note, people of all ages and abilities are invited to join the Helena Adult Kickball League. If you’d like to be part of this fun league please touch base with Sarah Melby.  You can call the church office and we will provide you with Sarah’s contact info.

I am asking everyone to please plan to be present for worship and the luncheon following it on Sunday, November 4.   We will be observing All Saints Day in worship.  Guest musicians will be The Mighty Souls Brass Band who were last with us on Easter Sunday. During lunch, representatives from several local ministries will present brief (5 minutes or less) statements about how their ministry is making a difference in Helena-West Helena and how we can support them.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, October 7, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Based on the recommendation of the Worship Advisory Group that was formed earlier in the year, and with the approval of the vestry, we have undertaken a search for an organist who is specifically trained in pipe organ and church music. Surprisingly, we already have someone interested in the position and he will be with us for the next four Sundays on an interim basis.  I’d like to tell you a little bit about him and encourage you to be at worship some or all of the next several weeks.

Dr. Gabriel Statom lives in Memphis and has extensive experience in church music.  He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, with an emphasis in vocal and piano, from the University of Mississippi, which he attended on a full music scholarship.  His Master’s Degree in Music, with an emphasis in organ, is from Florida State University and his Doctor of Worship Studies is from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies.  He has served in a variety of churches and been active in many community music groups.

Earlier this week I had lunch with Dr. Statom, who goes by “Gabe.”  I found him to be friendly and a committed follower of Jesus Christ.  I think he is a good “fit” for St. John’s and I hope you can be present to welcome him this coming Sunday, October 7.

You may be wondering what happens to our current keyboard person, Dagmar Bergan, if we hire a new organist.  The good news is that Dagmar will remain on staff at St. John’s.  Dagmar is an extremely talented pianist, but is not specifically trained in organ.  She will work alongside the new organist and myself to strengthen our music program and contribute to our goal of becoming a church that draws folks from throughout this part of the Delta.

Ray+
