St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, July 23, 2017

From Fr. Ray +

Royce and I had a wonderful vacation and are glad to finally be back home.  While it was nice to spend some quality time with family, we are looking forward to some of the good things coming up at St. John’s.

On Sunday, July 30, we will have a light lunch and homemade ice cream immediately following worship. Our guest musician at worship will be Everett Long.  Everyone so enjoyed his visit with us last month that we have asked him to be with us again on Sunday, July 30.

Our “Neighborhood Back-to-School Event” is Saturday, August 5 at 11 a.m. at the church.  I encourage you to consider helping out with either the School Supplies Team or the Meal Team.  This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet some of our neighbors, provide children with school supplies and invite folks to St. John’s.  School supply list for JF Walh is attached.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

From Fr. Ray +

Beginning July 7th – July 21st St John’s will host two groups from the Together for Hope that will be working throughout the community of Helena-West Helena on various projects.  While staying in our undercroft, they will teach swimming lessons, repair several buildings and work on various projects in the community.  We have hosted them over the past several years and they are always a delight to have with us.  Many of them join us for the adult education class.  On Sunday, July 9 and July 16, we will provide a Fun, Food and Fellowship time in the chapel immediately following the service where we will have the opportunity to share food, stories and meet these wonderful people.  So please mark your calendars for these Sundays and share in the light lunch and wonderful gathering of God’s people.

Our Neighborhood Back-To-School Event will take place in the garden at St. John’s on Saturday, August 5 at 11 a.m.  More volunteers have stepped forward to help with this event.  Two teams were formed at our meeting Monday. Maureen Jones is helping Father Ray with some of the overall logistics of the event. If you would like to assist with one of these teams, please contact one of the current volunteers.

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, July 2, 2017

From Fr. Ray +

Many of the folks who have participated in the mid-week class on The Apostles’ Creed have commented that it is one of the most interesting classes they have attended. Due to summer schedules, we have decided to offer the course again during adult Sunday School at 9:30 on Sunday mornings and discontinue the Wednesday evening class. So, beginning this coming Sunday, we will start over with Week 1 of the study.

Thanks to everyone who extended a warm St. John’s welcome to our guest soloist, Mr. Everett Long, last Sunday. We are looking forward to having him with us again toward the end of July.

Please keep Marzell and Justin in your prayers as they are away at Young Life Camp this week in North Georgia. I’m sure this will be a wonderful experience for these two young men. Also, thanks to all who helped make this week possible for them.

Our Neighborhood Back-To-School Event will take place in the garden at St. John’s on Saturday, August 5 at 11 a.m.  More volunteers have stepped forward to help with this event.  Two teams were formed at our meeting Monday. The “Meal Team” consists of Susan Carter, Jack & Nancy Horner and Anna Barry. The “School Supplies Team” includes Carla Meyers, Grace Henderson and Melody Rogers. Maureen Jones is helping Father Ray with some of the overall logistics of the event. If you would like to assist with one of these teams, please contact one of the current volunteers.

Soon you will see a box labeled “School Supplies” at the entry to the church. You can participate in this ministry by purchasing new school supplies such as notebooks, pencils and Crayola crayons and placing them in the box. A full school supply list will be put in our weekly newsletter in the near future.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, June 25, 2017

From Fr. Ray +

Please Note: The 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Eucharist and the Wednesday evening book study on The Apostles’ Creed are canceled this week, June 21, due to Fr. Ray attending an ordination service in Lake Village.

________________________________

Last Sunday I preached on the good news of justification by faith.  That simply means we are made right with God through faith and faith alone. However, the faith that saves is never “alone.” Those who have come to God through Christ make their faith known by serving others in his name. Please take a moment to consider the following information and invitation.

We are planning to provide a simple supper and school supplies for some of our neighborhood children just before school starts in August. I believe this is one way we can witness to our community about God’s love and grace.

At our next meeting on Monday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the church, we will decide on specifics such as date, time and exactly who, and how many children and family members will be invited to this event. Volunteers are needed to assist with gathering school supplies and preparing a simple supper.

Guest Soloist This Sunday!

This coming Sunday, June 25 we are delighted to have a guest soloist at St. John’s! Everett Long is a familiar face to anyone who has attended PCCUA musicals. We are happy he will be sharing his beautiful voice and enriching our worship experience.

_________________________________

I am leading a six-week class on The Apostles’ Creed each Wednesday, 6:15 p.m. The Apostles’ Creed is an excellent summary of our Christian faith.  The remaining classes are as follows:

  • Week 5:  The Forgiveness of Sins
  • Week 6:  The Resurrection of the Body

Each class will include a brief video by Rev. Adam Hamilton. We have used his material before and found it both inspiring and challenging.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
