St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 22, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Several weeks ago we had a very productive gathering after worship where we discussed those things we most appreciate about St. John’s.  Based on that information we identified three core values that we would like to concentrate on moving forward. Those three values are:

  • Worship and Liturgy
  • Discipleship and Spiritual Formation
  • Outreach and Mission

Our next step is to organize a team of folks for each of these core values.  These teams will prayerfully consider how we go about living into our core values in a way that reflects our love for God and his people.  Please consider which of these three teams you would like to support with your presence.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Young life of Phillips County is actively sharing the gospel with area teens.  They want to share their mission and story with local residents.  Ben and I are hosting a table at a banquet for Younglife.  It is Thursday, April 26, from 6:30 - 8:00pm in the fine arts center at PCCUA.  We can invite 6 people to sit at our table.  If anyone is interested in hearing what Younglife is about and how they are impacting the lives of local teens, please give me a call.  My number is 870-714-0358.  We are fortunate to have this organization in our area!  We will have the pleasure of listening to some of the teenagers that attend.   I can't wait to hear how God is working in their lives!!

Thanks!  Julie Pittman

Congratulations to Allison Biederman on her induction last Sunday into the Society of St. John the Evangelist!  Fr. Russ Snapp, who is also a member of the SSJE, officiated at the induction and also preached.  It is always a pleasure to welcome Fr. Russ back to St. John’s.

From Fr. Ray+

Royce and I are so very grateful to you, our St. John’s family, for your many acts of kindness last week following the death of my mother.  I wish I could mention each one of them individually, but if I did so it would take up this entire newsletter!  The food you brought to our home was both delicious and abundant.  It was especially helpful since we had a houseful of kids, grandkids, relatives and guests with us for Easter.

Many folks have asked us how we are doing. The answer to that question is that we are well.  Yes, there is a part of us that is sad at mom’s passing.  But, we are also grateful for the life she lived and the time we got to spend with her since we moved her to Arkansas over four years ago.  Mom had vascular dementia and had gradually lost all quality of life.  We are thankful that she has moved onward and upward into God’s nearer presence.  We are an Easter people.  In both life and death, we belong to the Lord.  Even as we trust mom to his keeping, so do we trust ourselves to his never ending mercy and grace.

My siblings (there are 5 of us) and our spouses will gather in Florida later this month to bury mom next to my dad.   I’ll conduct a brief graveside service and Royce will sing a few of mom’s favorite hymns.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

The St. John’s Altar Guild did an outstanding job keeping our church building liturgically appropriate and beautiful for Holy Week and Easter!  Their work is done quietly and behind the scenes, so all the rest of us see is the lovely results of their labor.  Thank you Altar Guild!

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 1, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus to the cross. All are welcome to participate in this journey at the following services this week:

On Maundy Thursday, we will gather at 5:30 p.m. to remember the night when Jesus gave his followers the new commandment that “they love one another.”  We will partake of Holy Communion, which Jesus instituted on this night.  The stripping of the altar will be the concluding action of this solemn service.

On Friday, we will gather at Noon to observe the liturgy of Good Friday. Before we sing with joy on Easter we will weep over our own sins and the sins of the world that led our Savior to the cross.  At 5:30 p.m. we will walk the Stations of the Cross.

We will gather at our usual worship time of 10:30 on Easter to celebrate our Lord’s resurrection.  Children will gather at 10:00 a.m. for the Flowering of the Cross.  A festive reception with joyful music and refreshments will take place in our garden immediately following worship.  There will also be an Easter Egg hunt for the children.

During this week, we will walk with Jesus through his betrayal, final meal with his followers and crucifixion.  Then, on Easter morning, we will celebrate the victory of life over death and renew our commitment to follow him as Lord.

Blessings,  Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, March 25 2018

From Fr. Ray +

A big THANKS to all who attended the Listening Meeting and Lunch following worship last Sunday! Special appreciation goes out to West Hornor for cooking the pulled pork and baked beans and to Angie Fielder for lining up the delicious side items.

Three general values emerged from our discussion. Those three values are:

  1. Discipleship and Spiritual Development is seen as vital to our life as a congregation. There was agreement that our central purpose is to worship God and help our members and friends grow in their relationship with God through Christ and then to encourage them as they live out that relationship in every area of their lives.
  2. Worship and Liturgy is deeply valued by our congregation. There was particular interest in exploring ways we can enhance our worship services by  strengthening/expanding our music program.
  3. Outreach and Ministry to Our Community is considered a visible expression of our commitment to Christ. This includes both evangelism as we encourage others to follow Jesus and ministries aimed at meeting human needs.

This meeting did not include designing specific plans or programs related to these three primary values. Three groups will be created for the purpose of designing specific plans related to each value. Please prayerfully consider being part of one of these groups, then call or email me and let me know which group is of interest to you.

We will enjoy our final Soup Supper this Wednesday, March 21 following our Eucharist at 5:30. Thanks to all who have prepared delicious soups!

Lent, Holy Week and Easter at St. John’s

Our Lenten Journey this year includes Evening Prayer on Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel.  Our Wednesday Eucharist continues on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.  Our Holy Week Schedule is:

  • Maundy Thursday Service at 5:30 p.m.
  • Good Friday Service at Noon
  • Good Friday Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m.

Our Easter Service will be at our usual time of 10:30 a.m.  Children will gather at 10:00 a.m. for the Flowering of the Cross.  Following Easter Worship, we will gather in the garden for refreshments and an Easter Egg Hunt for the children.  An added blessing this year will be an ensemble of Memphis musicians providing joyful music during our Easter reception in the garden.  We are grateful for the generosity of one of our members in making this ensemble part of our celebration of Easter.  Be sure to invite your family and friends to celebrate our Lord’s resurrection with you at St. John’s!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
