St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 16 2018

From Fr. Ray+

This coming Sunday, September 16, we will be starting a new study in the Adult Sunday School Class. The title of this 6-week series is “Enough” and deals with Christian Stewardship. Promotional material for the series describes it in these words:

“Money has great power in our lives and, when used wisely, helps us meet goals, provide for our needs, and fulfill life purposes. But in recent years, many of us ignored this wisdom when managing and spending our money. We spent tomorrow’s money today. The result: not greater happiness, but greater stress and anxiety. Enough is an invitation to rediscover the Bible’s wisdom on prudent financial practices. Find the keys to experiencing contentment, overcoming fear, and discovering joy through simplicity and generosity.”

As always, I am willing to present this class in a mid-week setting if there is interest. I realize that not everyone can make it to the Adult Sunday School Class on Sunday mornings at 9:15. If you are interested in a mid-week presentation of the same material, please let me know.

Stewardship is an important aspect of our Christian commitment. This study of “Enough” will help prepare us for our three-week Stewardship emphasis that runs October 21 thru November 4.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 9, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

You may recall that back in the winter, we had a congregational gathering at which we discussed the things we most appreciate about St. John’s Church.  Based on that discussion we narrowed our findings to the top three things our folks appreciate about their church. Those three things were:  1) Worship in the Anglican Tradition, 2) Outreach to persons in need in our community and beyond and  3) Opportunities for Spiritual Growth and Discipleship.  We formed three groups of church members who have met to discuss things we can do to further develop those three areas of congregational life.  At last week’s meeting of the Outreach Group, it was decided that we will include a special focus on Outreach Ministries in our community as part of our stewardship emphasis this year.  Our annual stewardship focus will take place October 21, 28 and November 4.  November 4 is going to be a very special day as we receive our annual estimate of giving cards during worship followed by lunch in the undercroft.  During lunch representatives of community agencies will provide very brief descriptions of what their organizations do and how we can support them.  The other two groups are meeting this week and next week and will be finalizing plans for their areas of focus.  I appreciate the work and wisdom these groups are bringing to St. John’s!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, September 2, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

St. John’s is hosting a welcome party for Teach For America teachers and supporters.  The party will be held at the home of Lindalu and Alan Hargraves on Thursday, August 30 at 5:30 p.m.   Please save the date and drop by to welcome these new teachers!  Several of them have already visited our Sunday morning worship service.  Let’s make sure they know how glad we are to have them in our community and how welcome they are at St. John’s!

If you receive the diocesan newsletter, The Communique, you may have seen Bishop Benfield’s appeal for financial support for clergy in the Diocese of Cuba.  At the recent General Convention of the Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Cuba was welcomed back into the Convention after an absence of over fifty years.  During this time, faithful clergy have continued to serve the Cuban Church.  However, the political realities in Cuba meant that none of them have any pension or retirement support.  Each diocese in The Episcopal Church has been asked to contribute $6,500 to the Church in Cuba for the specific purpose of providing pensions for elderly Cuban priests and deacons.  Contributions can be made to St. John’s and earmarked for “Cuban Church.”

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 19, 2018

From Fr. Ray+

Last Sunday we had an unexpected visitor at our worship service.   Shortly after the service started, a disheveled man and his dog entered the church and sat down on the back pew. We learned later that he was a canoer on his way to Louisiana and had stopped to spend the night at the boat ramp at the Helena Harbor.   Due to the sad situation with the murder/suicide that happened at the harbor while he was there, he had to leave the park until the police finished their investigation.   After leaving the park he found his way to St. John’s.   I am so proud of the way he was welcomed by our congregation!   He was warmly greeted, invited to come forward for Communion, given some cash and provided with a hotel room for two nights.   On Tuesday I picked him up at the hotel and took him back to his canoe so he could continue his trip down the river.   Whenever opportunities like this arise I am reminded of Hebrews 13:2

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for bydoing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Teach For America Party!   On Thursday, August 30 at 5:30 p.m. St. John’s is hosting a party for Teach For America teachers at the home of Lindalu and Alan Hargraves. Everyone at St. John’s is invited to come out and welcome these young folks who have come from all around the country to teach in our local schools.   More information will be provided as we get closer to the date of the party.

Attention all Vestry Members!  Our next meeting will be held Monday, August 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the undercroft.

Blessing Fr. Ray+
