St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 18, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Recently I met with Rev. Debbie Head, the new pastor at First United Methodist Church, to discuss creation of a joint children’s ministry between St. John’s and First Methodist.  This would not be a Sunday School class, but rather a ministry program that would meet on Sunday afternoons.  The initial staffing of the program would come from volunteers from our two churches.

In order to get input from parents we are having an informational meeting and pizza supper on Thursday, August 29 at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.   All parents, children and interested adults are welcome to attend.  This new program will only happen if there is sufficient interest on the part of the parents of elementary age children in our two congregations.  So, if you are interested, but cannot make the meeting, please call or email me so that I am aware of your interest.  This meeting is not just for parents!  If you are an adult who loves kids and would consider being part of the program team, please let me know!  This could be a wonderful opportunity for our children.  I look forward to hearing from you and/or seeing you at the meeting on the 29th

The Adult Sunday School class will not be meeting until the Sunday after Labor Day. At that time we will begin a study of Moses.  More information will be provided as we get closer to the start of our fall class.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

Our Front Porch, a traveling Arkansas nonprofit project supported by the Episcopal Church in Arkansas, is scheduled to stage an event at the Delta Cultural Center on Saturday, August 17, 1-4 p.m.  The event focuses on the traditions of neighborliness and hospitality and makes space for civil conversations.  Included in the event is a fine art show based on the themes of belonging and home, storytelling, and children's craft time.  The activity at the core of the event is the conversation circle. We are looking for community members to volunteer to initiate conversations and encourage others to participate in sharing memories of home.  As all good front porch conversations go, we expect the talk to veer all over the place but beginning with home is a good place to start. Volunteers will not be working alone and must commit to a 1-hour discussion of what the role entails. A working lunch is planned for August 8th at 12:15 at The Tavern in Helena or a phone conference can be scheduled.  The Our Front Porch event is free and open to the public.  We hope you can be a part of this community effort to bring folks together.  For more information call Jeannie Stone (479) 747-0210 or email stonejeannie@gmail.com.  Thank you.

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, August 4, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

The priesthood of all believers is a core doctrine of our faith.   In I Peter 2:5-9 we read

"You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ … But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

The priesthood of all believers was very much in evidence on Sunday, July 21.

When I was admitted to the hospital shortly after midnight on that date, one of the things I was not overly concerned about was what would happen later that morning at St. John’s. I was confident our congregation would pull together and get through worship just fine. Sure enough, that is exactly what happened.  A huge THANK YOU to Senor Warden Gina Pillow for all that she did to help things go smoothly.  Special appreciation goes to Ann Lee who stepped in on very short notice to lead Morning Prayer.  Since Gabe was out that morning, too, I appreciate those who helped our guest organist navigate through our service.

As an FYI, I have made a full recovery and enjoyed being back at church this past Sunday. I hope nothing like this ever happens again, but if it does, I take comfort in knowing that the “priesthood of all believers” is more than just a theological concept at St. John’s.

The Adult Sunday School class will not be meeting until the Sunday after Labor Day. At that time we will begin a study of Moses.  More information will be provided as we get closer to the start of our fall class.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

The St. John’s Men’s Group will be having a hot dog supper at the church on Thursday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m.   Since forming last year, the Men’s Group has met several times, one of which was to cook for this year’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.  Each event has provided opportunity for enjoyable fellowship with other men from the church.  We will be meeting in the undercroft. Please feel free to bring a guest.

The Adult Sunday School class will not be meeting until the Sunday after Labor Day.  At that time we will begin a study of Moses.  More information will be provided as we get closer to the start of our fall class.

I appreciate the warm hospitality our congregation showed this year’s Together For Hope volunteers.  The receptions on two consecutive Sundays and the food brought to the volunteers on two consecutive Mondays were a blessing to the group.  Thank you for showing them such kindness!

Blessings, Fr. Ray +
