St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 26, 2020

FROM FR. RAY+

St. John’s Annual Parish Meeting is this coming Sunday, January 26.  It will be take place immediately following worship and will include a potluck lunch.  Meat will be provided, so please bring side dishes to share.  Following lunch we will have a brief meeting during which I will talk about some of good things happening in 2020.  Also, we will elect three new members to our vestry.  Those nominated include Allison Biederman, Mark Rogers and Michael Allen. While our Annual Meeting is usually relatively brief, it is an important time in our congregational life.  I encourage everyone to be present if at all possible.

On a different note, last Saturday I led a training event for five new Eucharistic Ministers.  In the Episcopal Church, Eucharistic Ministers are the people who participate in the Communion Service by serving the chalice of wine.  Those who are newly trained include Billy Howell, Allison Biederman, Ben Pittman, Michael Allen and West Hornor.  Later this year, hopefully soon, Ann Lee and I will be leading a training session for new acolytes.  If you are interested in serving as an acolyte, please let Ann or me know and we will keep you posted on the training event.

Thanks, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 19, 2020

FROM FR. RAY+

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATE OF OUR ANNUAL PARISH MEETING HAS CHANGED FROM JANUARY 19 TO JANUARY 26.

We have quite a bit happening at St. John’s during January. Please mark your calendar for the following:

Training for Eucharistic Ministers is being offered this coming Saturday, January 18, 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the church.  During this ninety minute training event you will be introduced to the history, theology and practice of serving as a Eucharistic Minister.  Please contact me if you like to be part of this training and have not already signed up for it.

This coming Sunday, the Adult Sunday School Class begins a new five-week study of the book Living Unafraid by Rev. Adam Hamilton.  A brief DVD presentation will accompany each week’s lesson.  The class begins at 9:15.

Our Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 26, immediately following worship. Lunch will be served.   All members and friends of St. John’s are encouraged to be present for this once-a-year meeting.  While the meeting is not very long, it is important.  We will be electing three new vestry members to a three-year term.  Those nominated to the vestry include Mark Rogers, Allison Biederman and Michael Allen.

Finally, I wanted to remind you that the Memorial Service for Rev. Arnold Hearn will be held this coming Friday, January 17 at 2 p.m., at the Episcopal Church in Marianna. Rev. Hearn was a faithful servant of Christ and His Church.  His sweet spirit and kind ways made a significant impact on many persons, including our own congregation.  Fr. Arnold frequently served as a supply priest when St. John’s was between rectors.  He and Trisha are much loved by all of us and we are deeply grateful for their time with us.  Please keep Trisha and the rest of the family in your prayers.

Thanks, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, January 5, 2020

From Fr. Ray+

On this cusp of a New Year, I am thinking of a lovely hymn by John Bell, a contemporary Christian musician.  It is called Behold, I Make All Things New.  There are several versions of it on You Tube.  I particularly like the rendition by the University of Notre Dame Folk Choir.  If you have a chance, Google it.  I think you’ll be glad you did.  Based on words from Revelation 21:5, it is a lovely reminder that we move into this New Year with God’s promise of newness ringing in our hearts.  Here is an excerpt from one of the verses:

Behold, behold, I make all things new,

Beginning with you and starting today.

Behold, behold, I make all things new,

My promise is true, for I am Christ the way.

Whether we are young or old, most of us can point to a few places in our lives where newness would be welcome.   It is my prayer that our shared ministry at St. John’s in 2020 will be one in which we are open to the Spirit of Christ as he moves among us making all things new.  It is going to be a wonderful year and I look forward to sharing it with you!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+
