St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 21, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Between Palm Sunday and Good Friday Jesus heard the crowd both bless him and call for his crucifixion.  He experienced betrayal, abandonment, profound grief and physical, as well as spiritual, pain.  Our Maundy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies help us enter into those tragic times in the life of our Lord.  Those liturgies are a way of saying “not so fast, there” as we race toward Easter morning.  Although we know how this story ends, we must avoid the temptation of taking short cuts from  Palm Sunday’s “Hosanna!” straight to  Easter’s “Alleluia!.”  Our services this week are:

  • Maundy Thursday Service at 5:30 p.m.
  • Good Friday Service at Noon
  • Good Friday Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m.

Then, on Easter Morning we will gather at 10:30 to celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection.  Our service will include beautiful music from our organist, Dr. Gabriel Statom, guest violinist Ms. Alice Hasen and guest soloist Ms. B.J. Webster of the Memphis Chorale.

Following worship, everyone is invited to the Garden for mimosas for the adults and juice boxes for the children.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

The Flowering of the Cross will take place at 10 am Easter Sunday.

On behalf of the St. John’s Spiritual Development Group, I am pleased to let you know that our next event will be led by Rev. Stuart Hoke on Saturday, May 11, in the undercroft.  Currently on staff at Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock, Rev. Hoke was on staff at Trinity Church Wall Street on 9/11.  He will be speaking to us about his experiences on that horrible day.  During the attacks he was at Trinity’s St. Paul’s Chapel, which was practically in the shadows of the twin towers.  I believe you will be deeply blessed by his presence in our midst.

From Fr. Ray+

This Wednesday, April 10, is the final week of our Lenten Program, The Way of Love.  We will gather in the chapel at 5:30 for a brief Eucharist, then will go the undercroft for homemade soup and our program.  Our lesson this week revolves around the two words “Worship” and “Go.”  Worship is the natural response of hearts turned toward God in gratitude.  Like the first disciples, we, too, are called to “go” and spread the good news of God’s love made manifest in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I am very grateful to everyone who participated in this year’s Lenten Program at St. John’s.  A heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to all those who prepared delicious homemade soups each week!

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, April 7, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

Our Wednesday Lenten Program for April 3 begins at 5:30 p.m. with a brief Eucharist in the chapel.  Afterwards we will go to the undercroft for homemade soup and our program The Way of Love.  This week’s program takes a look at the biblical concept of “Rest.”   Here is a brief excerpt from this week’s material:

We do not live in a culture that encourages REST.  All too often, we are forced to work harder and longer hours, and it shows in our health.  Yet, from the beginning, God – who rested on the seventh day of creation – set rest into the pattern of all life.  Truly practicing The Way of Love means spending time with God in sabbath rest.  Not everyone has the luxury of long breaks and vacations, or even days off.  Still, we can help each other find ways internally to pause and receive the gift of sabbath.  The act of rest and restoration is a part of the cycle of rebirth that is God’s hope for us and gift to us.

All are welcome to join us as we continue our Lenten journey on The Way of Love.

Blessings, Fr. Ray+

Sympathy is extended to Ann Lee and family at the death of her brother, Johnny Hargraves.  Johnny’s funeral service will be this Friday, April 5 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s.  Visitation will be at 1:00 in the church Undercroft.   May Johnny rest in peace and rise in glory.

From Fr. Ray+

Week three of our Lenten Program will take place March 27.  We will gather in the chapel at 5:30 p.m. for a brief Eucharist before going to the undercroft for a simple homemade soup supper and program. Week three of our Lenten program is called Learn Wisdom and Live.  In the Bible, wisdom is an active and powerful force present even at the beginning of the world.  Sometimes personified in feminine imagery, Wisdom does not want anyone to be left without knowledge of God and refuses to deny God’s love to anyone who is willing to learn.  All are invited to join us as we consider how wisdom is not simply studying a book or memorizing a few facts.  Indeed, wisdom goes beyond mere knowledge into action.

Blessings, Fr. Ray +

St. John’s Episcopal Church - Sunday, March 24, 2019

From Fr. Ray+

The theme for our Wednesday evening Lenten Program this week is Prayer.  Specifically, we will be looking at prayer through the lens of the deliverance of Israel through the Red Sea.  Prayer takes many forms, so this week we will be considering each of the following ways of praying:

1. Adoration: We lift up our hearts and minds to God, asking nothing but to enjoy God’s presence.

2. Praise: We praise God, not to obtain anything, but because God’s Being draws praise from us.

3. Thanksgiving: We offer gratitude to God for all the blessings of this life, for our redemption, and for whatever draws us closer to God.

4. Penitence: In penitence, we say we are sorry, confess our sins, and make amends and life change wherever possible.

5. Oblation: We offer ourselves, our lives and labors, in union with Christ, for God’s purposes.

6. Intercession: We bring before God the needs of others.

7. Petition: We present our own needs, that God’s will may be done.

As a reminder, during Lent we begin at 5:30 with a brief Eucharist in the Chapel, then go to the undercroft for a simple supper of homemade soup and our Lenten Program.   All are welcome!
